Repairing Scratches on a Car

To repair scratches on a car, you must first determine if the damage was done just to the clear coat or if the paint has been harmed. Clear coat scratch repair and deep scratch repair require two different procedures.

Repair Scratches in Your Car's Clear Coat

A scratch in the clear coat is much easier to repair than one that has infiltrated the paint.

  • Prepare the car surface. You must remove any dirt from the scratched area before you repair it.
  • Sand down the area. With an abrasive tool, you must sand the area until the scratch is no longer visible.
  • With a rubbing compound, you would buff the area you just sanded. There should be no scratches left on the surface.
  • With a polishing pad, you will restore the shine to the affected area.
  • Apply a high-quality car wax product to protect the area.

Repairing Deep Scratches in Your Car

Having a scratch in the paint will be slightly more complicated with a few extra steps added in. While the beginning may seem the same, it's at the end of this project you notice the difference.

  • Prepare the car surface. You must remove any dirt from the scratched area before you repair it.
  • Sand down the area. With an abrasive tool, you must sand the area until the scratch is no longer visible.
  • With a scratch remover kit, you will gain the filling compound needed to repair the scratch.
  • With a rubbing compound, you would buff the area you just repaired. There should be no scratches left on the surface.
  • With a polishing pad, you will restore the shine to the affected area.
  • Apply touch-up paint to mask the area that was repaired. You will need to ensure the touch-up paint matches exactly for a seamless finish.
  • Apply a high-quality car wax product to protect the area.

Repairing Dents on a Car

When a dent appears in your car's body or bumper, you will want to take swift action to repair it before the damage gets worse. The steps needed to repair a dent have a lot to do with where the imperfection is located and what part of the car it is on.

Removing Dents from Plastic Bumpers

Trying to repair a dent in the hard bumper plastic can prove to be difficult unless you make the material more malleable. Here are some steps to help you remove those bumper dents.

  • Boil hot water.
  • Pour the steaming hot water over the dent.
  • While wearing gloves, reach behind the bumper and attempt to push out the dent.

If you cannot get behind the bumper, it will need to be taken off of the car before you pour water on it.

Fixing a Small Car Dent

There are several ways to fix a small car dent, depending on where and how bad the damage is. Here are a few of the most popular methods.

Plunger Method

  • With a cup plunger, place the tool around a small to medium-sized round dent.
  • Use the suction power to pull out the dent.
  • If the dent doesn't budge, use some water around the plunger to create a better seal.
  • When you feel or hear the pop, stop plunging.

Hammer Method

  • Grab a rubber mallet for larger dents. You will also need a dolly based on the size of the dent.
  • Put the dolly on top of the dent and gently hammer the inside of the dent towards the dolly.
  • Begin with the deepest spot first, typically the center, and work your way out.

Hair Dryer Method

  • Gather a hairdryer and compressed air for minor dents.
  • Heat the dent with your hairdryer at the hottest temperature. As the dent becomes hot, the material becomes more pliable.
  • When the surface is hot to touch, spray it with compressed air.
  • The cold air should force the area to contract, which could make the dent pop out.
